Non-death march winter trip possibilities

• 3 mile hike to Stephens' Pond Lean-to
• Wakely Mtn. (5m RT, no lean-to)
• Vanderwhacker Mountain
  • 10 mile RT, or 5 mile RT if we can drive along the road. Plenty of car-camping type spots along the road, I'm just not sure the state of the road in winter.
• Hopkins (2825'), Giant lean-to (3500'), Owl Head Lookout (2530') - total thru hike of 8.82m. Reportedly shortenable to 7.68m by taking a not-recommended confusing hike. 4.24 to the lean to (plus a half mile or so jaunt up Hopkins), and 4.5 mile hike out to the exit on rt9, past owl head lookout. Side trek to giant 2.5 mile RT, plus 2.7 mile RT for Rocky Peak Ridge. If you're coming from the lean-to add another mile.

  • Ampersand (3353′) 5.5m RT - maybe sortof leanto's across the lake
  • Scarface (3054′) 7mRT (no lean-to)
  • St. Regis (2874′) (7m RT, no lean-to)
  • Baker (2452′) 2mRT, easy walk from Saranac Lake (no leanto)
  • McKenzie: a bit west of lake placid: 1.5m to lean-to, 2.1 miles from lean-to to mckenzie mountain at 3861 feet. Includes options: jackrabbit ski trail (including trail to lean-to). Plus options to hike haystack mountain, moose mountain. Or whoa - the loch bonnie lean-to in the middle of nowhere!!!
