- Stuff I would bring for next time winter camping:
- Fewer clothes. Not too much extra. I didn't really change clothes much at all.
- Less food. I packed way too much, particularly trail snacks. Maybe bring a single bag of trail mix (dried fruit, nuts, choco). Bring just enough for me to munch on.
- Bring a tent or not based on the trailhead and whether or not it looks like people are there already.
- I brought 2 pairs of gloves (light and heavy). Both got a bit wet, I'd bring a third.
- Better/easier dinner food (just boil water, no mess)
- Magic wand for water purification
- I could have left the 2-man tent behind and relied on lean-to's maybe.
- If it were windy, then the lean-to could have been very cold.
- Secondary light source is important.
- Should have had extra batteries.
- Should have had plenty of moleskin.
- Use cup as a plate for everything.
- Gators would have been good to keep my pants from getting icy.
- Keep your water bottles from freezing in your pack by putting them in a wool sock or insulated bottle cover. You can make bottle covers by taping closed cell foam around your bottles.
- Chemical water treatments take longer to work in colder water. Give the chemical time to work if you are treating cold water.
- In below-freezing weather, turn your water bottles upside down so that the ice forms at the bottom of the bottle instead of in the opening.
Weight:
- (For 20+ degree semi-winter weather): no tent, no stove, 20 degree bag, but pretty much everything else in my smaller pack: 21 pounds including food and 2 liters of water.
