Fishing

Things to try

  • Herring bait - a circle hook like 7/0 would do through the nose.
  • Stripers - morning and evening
  • Shad - shad dart, light rod - "Put a to oz sliding sinker to a barrel swivel then a three-foot leader to the shad dart."

Things to get

  • Washers and rubber bands
  • Filet knife
  • Tip-ups
  • Rod holder for canoe

Best places to fish

  • W/D - Round Lake, Dunham Reservoir, Burden Lake
  • Northern Pike
    • Round Lake
      • Question - what ARE those big jumping fish? (Carp probably)
    • Ballston Lake
    • Saratoga Lake
      • Question - is there a time when I can park here for free?
    • Cossayuna Lake
    • Great Sacandaga Lake
  • Walleye
    • Ballston Lake
    • Saratoga Lake
    • Dunham Reservoir
    • Tomhannock Reservoir
    • Burden Lake
  • Tiger Muskies
    • Round Lake
    • Cossayuna Lake
  • Rainbow Trout
    • Grafton Lakes State Park
      • I saw lots of bows iced a few years back at trout lake. Guys were fishing garden worms a few feet under the ice over 20 - 50 FOW.
      • There was about 10-15 guys in the northern, almost central part of the (Trout) lake in about 40-50 FOW. I just didn't see to many flags going up
      • When I fished trout lake, I did very well on big perch...so if you go up there, you could put up some tip ups for trout, and jig for perch.
    • Glass Lake
    • Thompson's Lake

ToDo

  • Catch Walleye
    • They like downwind, because it pushes the surface food and the warm water that floats to the top
    • They seem to be only in lakes that reach depths of around 30 feet or more. I'm guessing that maybe these depths are important, so maybe fish in or near 30' areas. (This isn't entirely true, Basic Creek Res. is only 16', and Cossayuna only 20'+)
  • Catch Northern Pike
    • downwind (see Walleye)
  • Hudson River
  • Kayaderosseras Creek
    • Catch rainbow trout
      • From shore
      • Canoe down from Rock City
  • Catch rainbow trout in one of the lakes: Glass, Thompson, Grafton Lakes
    • They like upwind, because the warm water will be downwind.
  • Catch more year-round fish
    • Perch
      • Drop worms to the bottom in medium-depth water instead of bobber-shallow method
      • Perhaps fish in slightly deeper water
    • Crappie - maybe try jigging even in summer.
      • We found tons of them one day ice fishing, mostly in a single hole.
      • Filleted crappie are very bland when fried IMO... but try this for crappie. Scale them, head them, gut them, and fry them whole. It makes a big difference and is my favorite fried fish. Because of that I prefer the 11 inchers. The fried fins are the best part, and the meat stays moist and retains it's sweetness.
    • Bigger sunfish(?)
  • Cherry Plain
    • Check it out, with or without canoe
  • Done:
    • Grafton Lakes state park
      • Canoe around (for a weekend?)
  • Battenkill
    • Canoe from Shushan to Rexleigh

  • Where the Normans Kill meets the hudson: fish there all the time; I usually go where the creek empties into the Hudson, along South Pearl St. I have caught freshwater grunts, smallmouth bass, yellow perch, white perch, sunnies, channel cats, bullheads, carp and eels. Towards the middle of the summer, I've even caught blue crab as they wander up from the Atlantic. It's a great place to fish. Some friends and I launched a canoe at the bridge where So. Pearl crosses the creek. We paddled until we reached the mouth of the creek at the Hudson. We caught beautiful bullhead and channel cats -big and fat, along with the usual white perch and eels. A great fishing spot!
  • For some fast action, there's an abandoned country club out in New Scotland. Its all overgrown and has 5 ponds loaded with bass. Most of them are small, but on a good day with no wind, I can catch bass as fast as I can toss them back and get the fly back into the water. Hint: look at the abondonded Railroad tracks out near Slingerlands and New Scotland. You'll see the ponds a few hundred yards from the tracks.
