- Northern Forest Canoe Route - Old Forge to Northern Maine
Possible trips w/D/J:
- Remember:
- Weekend:
- Floodwood/Follensby loop - https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/81881526 - 8 ponds, Awesome 13 miles, 6-7 short carries. Lots of camp spots, particularly on Floodwood and Follensby.
- This could be done with a larger group, it's not super difficult, and portages aren't bad
- Long weekend:
- Really long weekend:
- Prep: viability of canoe/carrying fish creek in Saratoga to the Hudson, is it possible?
Interactive map of campsites
- https://scholarworks.umass.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1052&context=nerr
- Canoe/Kayak trip - 60 miles: 15m on fish creek, 15m on the Hudson, 9 miles run/walk, 18m bike
- Ballston Lake/Round/Hudson/Mohawk Loop
- Canoe Loops/Trips
- Large lakes can be more wavy/rough, so linking lots of smaller ponds is really cool!
- Maybe what makes the 7 and 9 carries so nice is that it's more wildernessy because it's harder to access.

- Ponds (generally 7C/9C/Floodwood/USL):
- Rivers:
- River/Pond mix:
- Raquette river from Simon's Pond alone looks cool, oxbow - has nice campsites along the way (see my Canoe Map)
- If you really wanted to maximize distance like a mountain bike trail, there's some really crazy stuff you could do, like floodwood->follensby->hoel->9 carries->upper saranac lake, which then links you to raquette river/long lake, etc., but that's just so much awesome it becomes brutally excessive.

- Things to know
- Be proficient with your roll.
- Know how to swim in current.
- Know about rope rescue.
- Have good paddling skills.
- Know how to maneuver in holes, waves, and over drops.
- Take a swiftwater rescue course and a wilderness first aid course.
- Make sure someone has other useful things (and know who has them and where):
- first aid kit
- throw ropes
- knifes
- saws
- unpin/rescue kit
- extra water (or purification pills)
- extra food, fire starter
- emergency shelter blanket
- and cell phone (very helpful when in populated areas).
- Good things to look into getting
- Kayak Pump
- Elastic Strings on the kayak for holding paddle, etc.
- Really nice skirt for second kayak
- Spare glasses
- Kayak rescues
- Can I renter the kayak w/out a paddle float?
- T-rescue - Pull other person's kayak on the the boat, then use both boats to help person into kayak
- E.J.'s Rolling and Bracing
- Excersise:
- Hold onto the side of the pool (lightly). Lean to the side, get your head submerged a bit, and practice using your knee to snap the kayak upright.
- Work both sides.
- Put the paddle to the left, held like normal
- If you are upside-down in the water, you will be holding the paddle out of the water on the side of the boat.
- Rest your wrists or hands on the side of the boat
- Relax your hands, tight hands makes you do the wrong motion
- Head stays tilted to the left - think about biting your shoulder the entire time
- Always keep your eyes on the forward paddle blade
- Right hand lifts the paddle to the left side of your head (lift in the direction of the back of your wrist) with a bit of a twist.
- Then freeze that position, and fall to the right side. As soon as the paddle hits the water, push with your right knee. That is the brace.
- If you are under water, pull back on the paddle in the direction your wrist is pointing, over the left side of your head.
- Bring the paddle over your head, to move the paddle blade from overhead to directly to the right side (perpendicular to the kayak), and really snap with your right knee. This will flip you upright.

- Middle Kayaderosseras - To Driscoll Road - Ideal pleasant kayaking. Not fast, but generally plenty of water.
- Kayaderosseras Rapids - Definitely a bit on the scary side.
- Mourning Kill - Probably needs high water. Some work, but pretty fun
- Anthony Kill - Ideal - A bit wild and fun
