The very first thing on almost every "be thrifty" list is to plan meals around what's on sale at the supermarket. #2 is to stock up on things that are on sale. The very first appliance we bought (much to Dad's bewilderment) was a freezer--I have always stocked up on things on sale. (Chicken legs at $.99 and cheap pork are regulars). When you were very young, and I only shopped every two weeks (on payday--ever wonder why the supermarket is most crowded on Fridays and Saturdays?), I would study out the flyers for the 3 nearby supermarkets and buy accordingly at all three. Although now I only shop at one supermarket--the one I can walk to. Walking to the supermarket is a great way to cut down on impulse buying--you can only carry so much home! A half gallon of milk weighs 4 lbs!
